Smart Home Ideas
Wouldn't it be nice to snap your fingers and get your work done? With so many smart home advances and technological breakthroughs, you can get a lot of things done around the house automatically. These are some of my favorite smart home ideas:
1. Make your Coffee Maker Smarter
If you still make coffee the old fashioned way with the drip instead of using a Keurig Single-Serve or a Nespresso machine then you're in luck. With a Wemo plug-in switch, you can make any coffee maker smart. The Wemo plug-in switch sits between the wall outlet and the coffee maker so it's really easy to use. Once you've connected it, you can program it to turn on or off automatically. To have coffee ready when you wake up, just prep the coffee maker at night. Put in your favorite grind, pour in a carafe full of water and turn on the coffee maker and the Wemo switch off. Program it with your smartphone to start brewing at sunrise or 10 minutes before you get up. (Note that the Wemo plug-in switch will work with most drip coffee makers that has a simple on/off button).
2. Never Walk into a Dark Home Again
If you are scared of coming home to a dark house then you're going to like this idea. A light can be switched on when you are a block away from home. Or if you want your home to look like it is occupied at all times, you can have the lights turned on when the sun sets in your area. There are two types of Wemo switches. If you are handy with electrical switches or have an electrician in the family then you can replace your light switches with a Wemo switch. The other way is to get a Wemo plug-in switch. Using your smartphone, you can program Wemo switches to turn on your lights at sunset or a specific time. You can even get the Wemo switch to turn off the light after a period of time so you can save electricity. With Wemo switches, you will never have to come home to a dark house again.
3. Never Get Caught in the Rain without an Umbrella
A lot of us depend upon a weather forecast but weather can change at a blink of an eye. With a smart home, your smartphone can check the weather forecast throughout the day and alert you that it will be a downpour or a thunderstorm. The forecast can be checked before you leave the house in the morning and you can be notified to bring an umbrella because rain is in the forecast.
4. Reminds you to Leave Work before Sunset
If you don't like walking in the dark or driving at night, you might want to leave before the sun sets. With a little programming, your smartphone can notify you when to pack up and leave the office. You can specify exactly what time to leave or you can specify how many hours before sunset. Just figure out how many hours you will need to make your commute then subtract it from when sunset is in your area. The good thing about this is that sunset is on a sliding scale so you don't need to reprogram your settings.
5. Check if you Closed your Garage Door
Ever get the feeling that you left the house without closing your garage door? With a smart garage door opener like the Chamberlain Liftmaster, you can easily check if the garage door is open or closed. Just download the myQ app to your smartphone, connect the Liftmaster to your wi-fi network and you're off to the races. With the myQ app, you can quickly check the status of your garage door from anywhere in the world and if it is open, you can even close it using the app.
There are so many smart home devices on the market. With a little programming, you can outsmart your kids by getting more things done around the house and freeing up more time for you to enjoy with them.
